Yesterday I tested  20 Cat5e cables in a production plant, where some of the cables are being used and others no.   They are having sometimes problems of speed and connectivity in some locations and in others is ok. However, after testing all the cables,  "1 out of 20 passed the test "

The problem was always Return Loss !!.  What is causing that ?  How can I fix the problem ?

If you tested it with a DTX CableAnalyzer and the plot data was saved, you can send it to support@flukenetworks.com.We need the .flw file and notthePDF. Ask them for Adrian to take a look at it. Sorry to sound arrogant, but if you know what to look for in the results, it is not too difficult to diagnose.

For your reference:

Do you guys have a class that covers all htese type of things.  I think you guys (FLUKE) at one point had a certified cable tester class or something like that.

Thanks.

Yes, the CCTT. I re-wrote it a couple months ago, it is more hands on analyzing data taken from real installations. It is now run by:

The instructor is a former TAC person.

Since my last post on this subject, I have created some videos if you are unfortunate enough to get a Return Loss failure or NEXT failure.

DTX-CU-201 Diagnosing a Category 6 NEXT failure # 1 (Badly Terminated Permanent Link)
DTX-CU-202 Diagnosing a Category 6 NEXT failure # 2 (Cable Issue)
DTX-CU-203 Diagnosing a Category 6 Return Loss failure # 1 (Cable Issue)
DTX-CU-204 Diagnosing a Category 6 Return Loss failure # 2 (Water in the cable)
DTX-CU-205 Diagnosing a Category 6 Return Loss failure #3 (Bad cable)
DTX-CU-206 Diagnosing a Category 6 Insertion Loss #1 (Lubricant issue)

Although they say Category 6, the rules/guides in these videos apply to Category 5e and 6A as well.

Thanks for the great videos, Adrian!

Good to know these rules of thumb for quickly diagnosing common failures.

Please let us know if you record any more.
