Anybody know anything about a tester called "Validator or Validator-NT" made by JDSU?  The test results don't look very thorourgh, the tester is made by JDSU... If anyone has any information on this tester and if it tests to TIA/EIA standards or not, please let me know.

Mike,

Never used it or seen it but here is a link to their web page for this unit.......not quite a level III tester as far as I can see.

This tester falls under the term "Qualification Tester" as described in ANSI/TIA-570-B. It is not a certification tester and no cabling vendor will accept results from it if you are trying to obtain a cabling warranty. Looking at the documentation, I could not find any reference to ELFEXT/ACR-F.

As with the CableIQ Qualification Tester we sell, it will not meet the requirements of ANSI/TIA-568-C.2 which covers Category 3, 5e, 6 and 6A limits for Channel and Permanent Links. It does not meet the requirements for field tester accuracy as defined in ANSI/TIA-1152 or IEC 61935-1 either.

Thanks Joe!

What are the difference's between Level II and III testers?  Won't a Level II tester be OK for Cat5E??

Here are the levels for accuracy as defined in ANSI/TIA-1152:

  • Level IIe - Category 5e
  • Level III - Category 6
  • Level IIIe - Category 6A

Level II (TIA/EIA-TSB-67) covered Category 5 and is now obsolete as 2001. So no, Level II will not do Category 5e. You need at least Level IIe to do Category 5e.

For our non US folks, here are the levels for accuracy as defined in IEC 61935-1:

  • Level IIe - Class D
  • Level III - Class E
  • Level IIIe - Class Ea
  • Level IV - Class F and Fa

There is no Level IVa to support Class Fa (1 GHz) field testing, not even in draft.
