"The Green Building Technology Alliance [GBTA], established by BICSI, has added three new representatives from CABA."  GBTA has some of the finest of our industry to help lead us in sustainable building.

The Alliance representation stems from members of:
BICSI
InfoComm
TIA
CABA

and shares in the responsibility in developing innovation technology credits for LEED.

Within this forum, we are encouraged to have discussions about Green Building.  I would like to extend an invitation to anyone who wants to post about this type of technology.

Please feel free to post, this is an open discussion.

As CABA has joined and we are all participating in the Bright Green Building efforts, I want to extend the offer to Bicsi members to register for a FREE Building Intelligence Quotient program at www.building-iq.com

Send me an email with your Bicsi membership number at dkatz@building-iq.com after you register on the site and I will approve the application for the FREE BiQ and ask that you complete our survey to improve the program

General Cable would like to be involved in the GBTA?  How can we get a representative on board?

Thank you!

I think your best option would be to contact the GBTA through this forum or directly.  I believe the whole point of the GBTA is to develop innovation technology credits.  Here's a link to the website.  http://www.bicsi.org/gbta

Here is the place which anyone can give ideas for possible credits.  I do have a question for the GBTA Members:  Are the credits applied towards the design or can they be given for the installation?

There are a lot of terms being thrown around these days; I believe the best thing for everyone to do is familiarize yourself with the correct terms and get the latest information. I have been studying for the LEED Green Associate for a little while now, so I know very little, however I would like to share what I know so far.

A LEED Building Design & Construction project is based on a 100 point scale. There are 10 additional bonus points.

The four levels of LEED for are:
Certified: 40-49 points
Silver: 50-59 points
Gold: 60-79 points
Platinum: 80+ points

There are 7 categories:
Sustainable Sites (26 Points)
Water Efficiency (10 Points)
Energy & Atmosphere (35 Points)
Materials & Resources  (14 Points)
Indoor Environmental Quality (15 Points)
(The following 2 categories account for the 10 previously mentioned bonus points)
Innovation & Design (6 Points)
Regional Credit (4 Points)

Each category has prerequisites they must meet, after that they have what are called possible Credits. For example the Energy & Atmosphere category has three prerequisites and 8 credits. When talking about these Credits you could say “Im going after the Energy & Atmosphere -  Credit 2, On-Site Renewable Energy”. This credit by the way is worth a possible 7 points (depending on if it is Core & Shell, School or New Construction). So the 8 credits added up could give you a total of 35 points, some are worth more than others.

There may be inaccuracies or stuff that needs to be added to, please feel free to do so.

In addition to my previous post, I now have a question. What exactly does BICSI plan on proposing? What ID Credits do we see points being applied to relating to telecommunications? Are we planning on creating Credits?

It seems right off the bat that the Innovation & Design and the Regional categories in those bonus 10 points would be right up the telecommunications alley, however I don’t know. Both those categories look like what they call “low hanging fruit” and easily achievable by the other trades without getting telecommunications involved at all.

Can anyone who has been involved in a LEED project comment on the achievability of any telecommunications points under any Credit?

I received a mailing from Greenbuild.

Two of the Educational Sessions for the next conference are:
Earth and Water
Material Impact

Session track for the above include titles such as

-Re-membering: The patterns of living systems design
-Smartgrowth with green infrastructure for handling the climate change opportunity
-Exploring life-cycle methodology as a tool for communicating the environmental performance of a product
-Beyond sustainable: How LEED buildings can help restore America's forests
-Building sustainable communities through stakeholder engagement in the international model forest network
-Using the built environment as a bridge to a low carbon future
-The design of resource use in place(s)

Here's the question.

Could credits be awarded by using solutions which reduce water consumption and support the use of recycled materials when produced?

Just got a great idea for BICSI on the green front!
I will send it to GBTA and report back here when I get more info.
