The 50' rule states that you can't run an unrated cable more than 50' in a building unless it is in RMC, in which case the end of the RMC is considered to be the point of entry.

I have been requested to extend the service provider's entrance conduit from the original point of entry to another room in the facility which is approx 600 feet away. Obviously this will require pullboxes to be installed. I can't find any supporting information to indicate if the pullbox will be allowed or not. My initial feeling would be that the point where the RMC enters the pullbox could technically be considered the end of the continous conduit, and therefore be considered the entry point.

Can anyone confirm if pullboxes are allowed to be installed in the RMC entrance conduit? If pullboxes are not allowed, would a RMC straight pulling fitting be allowed?  Hopefully Vic Phillips is monitoring

Just looking at the definition of "Point Of Entrance". I would say no. It says "The point wihin a building at which the cable emerges from an external wall, from a concrete slab, or from a rigid metal conduit". I would say a pull box is emerging from RMC.

I don't know if I can directly answer the question, however on statement to consider in the 2005 NEC is in 800.90-A FPN 2 (2), where is talks about "a continuous metallic conduit...". I do not think the addition of pull points or any opening in the conduit is allowed. I thought this was clear in the 2002 NEC, but changes continue...

Thanks for the reply.

800.90 is actually in reference to the required primary protection. This won't really apply here because the service provider is installing optical fiber with nonmetallic jacketing. So, the issue is more in line with the lack of the fire rating on the jacket.

I agree though, my initial reaction is that the pullbox would not be allowed. The only thing that is left up to interpretation is that the language of the code says "RMC Conduit System...". This is where I question if a pullbox or straight pulling fitting would be considered part of the "System" or not.
