Hi,

I'm reading an article that Fiber Patch Cord can be conditioning with single and multi mode fiber, so in one end its single mode fiber with single mode connector, and the other end its multimode with multimode connector. How is your opinion ? is this really can be implemented in real life ? If yes, what is advantage and disadvantage from this type of fiber cord ?

Thanks,

Afif,

I've seen this before and yes, it can be implemented.  These cords are called "Mode Conditioning patch cords."  In order to implement you must have (3) things:
- Proper hardware
- Mode conditioning patch cords
- Existing MM fiber connectivity (62.5/50 µm)

This unique design demands implement orientation for the SM end configured to the transmitter.  Design is said to push the limitations of 1GbE to greater distances.  If you need help with this design, please contact me so I can walk you thru it.

Hi Kevin,

I'm still wondering about proper hardware that you notice before. Can you explain it more? So maybe in the other word, this type of cord is used to existing network active device (using multimode adapter) with the new one (that has a singlemode adapter). Is there wouldn't be a problem if i use this type of cord? Waiting to hear from you soon.

Thanks,

I'd like to know a bit more of where you're coming from.  This solution is application specific.

Which article was it?  Do you currently have 1GbE or have the need to migrate for the future?  This design is like having a "launch path" from your transmitter so using an adapter won't work.

Please be advised that this is not a solution to convert SM to MM applications.

OK - Here are 2 PDFs from Corning that may help you with understanding a possible real life application.

You asked about advantages and disadvantages of using this cord

Advantage - If the application is right then you don't have to run new fiber

Disadvantage - Losses will potentially be higher and may not work.

This is not something that should be part of an initial plan but more as a bandaid solution to a problem

I've heard that this design can be implemented for 10GbE.  Has anyone seen this?
