Greetings all,
I have been in more than a few data centers and have seen my fair share of designs out there. I would like to ask a few questions on the "official" way to design the cabling layout for a datacenter with regards to access patch panels in server racks. Is it safe to say that all server racks should have patch panels resident in the rack and then from the patch panel the ethernet ran to another patch panel in proximity to the switches? I have seen both ways where the patch cables are ran up and out of the server rack and direct to the switch stack and in other cases the patches ran direct to a localized access patch panel and then again patched in the network rack accordingly. I just want to know from the experts which was is the "official" way to do it in regards to this subject.

Thanks for your time.

Please revise this page from TIA 942, in each area you can set a CROSS CONECTION field

Hope this help

roerto,

Thanks for the reference! So I do not mean to beat a dead horse here but they illustrate having access layer switches located in each cabinet and from there I suppose fiber back to a core backbone? Maybe I am reading it wrong and the "Horiz dist area" means a separate rack for ethernet "access layer" switches and the "horizontal cabling" defined would mean patch panels from and to the "horiz dist area" rack and the server rack or "equip dist area"?

To put it in laymans terms the "horizontal cabling" would/should never be patch cables but instead patch panels and permenant cabling. Is this right?

Thanks again for the quick reply! I just want to ask the right questions in order to see our project through in the most professional manner. This type of stuff is work best done correctly the first time and made to suit scalable conditions!!! Worst thing I would want to see is ending a project like this and 6 months later regretting decisions to cut corners....

well this are just ideas to help to decide the best way for your DC project

1. look into the type of equipment
1.1 are they Blades, Storage,..... they need different cabling approach

2. DC computer room size 100 square meters or two hundred? the solution will be quite different if the DC is 500 m2 or larger.

please look into the pics and you will see from Main Distribution area cabling running on the tray to the different cabinets (HDA) they were punched down into paneles, from there we connected cords (7-10 mts) to the cabinets and to the servers´ NICs (NO panels inside cabinets nor switches).

But we have had projects were the design are like the one you told. from MDA fiber to the HDA (switches), then cooper link (Cat 6A) or fiber to the switches inside cabinets

Storage (fibre Channel) is other story they is solved with special connectors like IBMs ICON type, then you have to set a fiber optic matrix similar , but different. Emerson, Tyco have the system solution.

saludos
