| I have been asked for several customers to set as design premise the use of an intelligent cabling infrastructure to manage MACs.
At this point I would like to know your experiences
* when to define such stuff when not
* concerns to take care, and so on.
*
thanks in advance

| | Hi robert, My experience is that the intelligent patching solutions only work well where you have mature processes and standardised building blocks such as servers, networks, storage etc. In practice this excludes many organisations because data centers are constantly evolving, rarely has anyone had formal training and ownership of the cabling "knowledge" doesn't easily sit with any group. Many of the vendors play on this as one of the key benefits of their solution is that "the system will tell you the connectivity" saving on developing detailed workflow processes. You still have to manually configure the system with new components, as well as add cable labels where appropriate. If any cabling doesn't go through the intelligent patching system (fiber, cabling within racks, distribution centres, open frame wiring, etc) then its back to the spreadsheet, or one of the data center management tools where connectivity might be handled well Dave. |

| It has been my experience that if no one takes ownership of the system, and actively manages it, the administrative technology will be of little use.

| The most significant factor is ROI Return on Investment. How long will it be before I spend more on my existing process than on an IIM solution.

| 1. thanks for your ideas; so let put in this way to resume
PROCESS, PEOPLE, Economics & equipment are the components to evaluate if it is worth to set this kind of systems into a project.
Again gracias

| HI
I don't have much more idea regarding your question but I believe there are DC clamp meters that output a DC voltage for input into a standard meter. Whenever I looked these were the cheapest option.
Thank you
